Prevalence of Psychiatric Comorbidities and Impulsivity in Patients with Drug-Resistant Epilepsy

Research has found that patients with drug-resistant epilepsy exhibit a high frequency of Axis I comorbid psychiatric disorders, including depression and anxiety disorders, with a significant association of comorbid depression and impulsivity. A study conducted at the University of Buenos Aires analyzed patients with temporal lobe epilepsy and extra-temporal epilepsy, comparing their psychiatric comorbidities and impulsivity to a control group. The results showed that both groups of patients presented with a high frequency of Axis I comorbid psychiatric disorders, with depression being the most frequent disorder. Additionally, both groups exhibited higher impulsivity scores compared to the control group.

Key Takeaways:

  • Patients with drug-resistant focal epilepsies exhibit a high frequency of Axis I comorbid psychiatric disorders, including depression and anxiety disorders.
  • Comorbid depression is associated with higher impulsivity in patients with drug-resistant focal epilepsies.
  • Both temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) and extra-temporal epilepsy (ETE) groups presented with a high frequency of Axis II (Personality disorders) compared to the control group.
  • Standardized psychiatric assessment was conducted using the Structured Clinical Interview for Axis I and II diagnosis of DSM-IV (SCID I-II) and the Barrat-11 scale for impulsivity.
  • Seventy-three patients with TLE, 21 patients with ETE, and 58 healthy control subjects were included in the study.
  • The study found that impulsivity scores were significantly higher in both TLE and ETE groups compared to the control group.

Statistics:

  • 73 patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) were included in the study.
  • 21 patients with extra-temporal epilepsy (ETE) were included in the study.
  • 58 healthy control subjects were included in the study.
  • 64% of patients with TLE and 62% of patients with ETE presented with comorbid Axis I psychiatric disorders.
  • Depression was the most frequent comorbid disorder in both TLE and ETE groups.
  • 30% of patients with TLE and 25% of patients with ETE presented with comorbid Axis II personality disorders.
  • The Barrat-11 scale scores for impulsivity were significantly higher in both TLE and ETE groups compared to the control group.
