Regulation of Casein Synthesis in Goat Mammary Epithelial Cells
Researchers at Anhui Agricultural University have detailed new data on Proteins - Phosphoproteins, shedding light on the regulatory mechanism of casein synthesis in goats. The study, published in Animal Bioscience in 2025, investigates the role of epithelial-specific E74-like factor 5 (ELF5) in regulating casein synthesis in goat mammary epithelial cells (GMECs).
The research team, led by Cunxia Ma, found that ELF5 enhances cell viability and the expression of proliferation-related genes, while inhibiting cell apoptosis and the expression of apoptosis-related genes. Moreover, ELF5 upregulates the expression of aS1-, aS2-, b- and k-casein, as well as the activity of JAK2/STAT5 signaling pathway. The study's conclusion is that ELF5 upregulates casein synthesis by activating JAK2/STAT5 signaling pathway, providing a strategy for manipulating ELF5 to increase casein content and improve goat milk protein quality.
