Researchers Develop Innovative Method for Soil Fertility Management

Researchers at the Professor Jayashankar Telangana State Agricultural University have developed an innovative method for soil fertility management, which combines geostatistics and fuzzy clustering. According to the study, the method was tested in a 4-ha maize field in northern Telangana, India, where 200 geo-referenced surface soil samples were analyzed for various attributes. The results showed that the method was effective in delineating management zones for site-specific nutrient management, increasing nutrient use efficiency, and profitability in smallholder maize-based agroecosystems.

Key Takeaways:

  • The study used geostatistics and fuzzy clustering to analyze 200 geo-referenced surface soil samples in a 4-ha maize field in northern Telangana, India.
  • The research concluded that spherical models best described the spatial structure of most parameters, with strong spatial dependence.
  • The method developed in the study demonstrates the potential for optimal nutrient use efficiency and profitability in smallholder maize-based agroecosystems.
  • The study highlights the importance of spatial analysis in understanding soil fertility attributes and optimizing nutrient management.
  • The research has been peer-reviewed and published in the Environmental Monitoring and Assessment journal.
  • The study was conducted by a team led by Theerthala Anjaiah, with additional authors Pandit Vaibhav Bhagwan, Chitteti Ravali, Makam Uma Devi, Tadikamalla Laxmi Neelima, Darshanoju Srinivasa Chary, and Sumanta Chatterjee.
