AI-Powered Nursing Care Plans: A Comparative Study

As the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into nursing education continues to grow in significance, researchers at Mardin Artuklu University in Turkiye have conducted a comparative study to evaluate the effectiveness of AI-generated nursing care plans against those produced by nursing students. The study aimed to assess the quality and reliability of both types of care plans for patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy surgery. The findings suggest that while nursing students demonstrated high accuracy in formulating correct nursing diagnoses, ChatGPT-generated texts excelled in establishing nursing goals and developing appropriate interventions.

Key Takeaways:

  • The study compared 14 nursing care plans developed by nursing students with care plans generated by ChatGPT for identical patient scenarios.
  • The quality of student-generated care plans was determined to be satisfactory, while the quality of ChatGPT-generated texts was assessed as moderate.
  • Students exhibited the highest accuracy rate in formulating correct nursing diagnoses (90.22%), while ChatGPT-generated texts demonstrated superior performance in correctly establishing nursing goals (90.35%) and developing appropriate nursing interventions (91.07%).
  • The findings indicate that ChatGPT may serve as a valuable supplementary resource for surgical nursing education and care plan development.
  • Further research is warranted to determine the impact of ChatGPT on patient care quality and clinical effectiveness.
