Artificial Intelligence in Mathematics Education: Students' Acceptance and Perceptions

Researchers at Universitas Sebelas Maret have conducted a study to explore mathematics education students' acceptance and perceptions of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in enhancing their learning experience. The study, published in the Journal of Educational Management and Instruction, found that students generally perceive AI as useful and easy to use, but their behavioral intention to use AI is lower, indicating hesitation towards integrating AI regularly into their learning routines.

The study employed a Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) questionnaire for quantitative data and in-depth semi-structured interviews to gather qualitative insights from 389 mathematic students from several universities in Surakarta municipality, Indonesia. The results show that students appreciate AI for its ability to provide personalized learning, immediate feedback, and flexibility.

However, students still value traditional face-to-face interactions with instructors and are concerned about over-reliance on technology. The study contributes to the theoretical framework that AI tools should complement, not replace, traditional teaching methods. The researchers recommend a gradual integration of AI in education with adequate support for both students and instructors.
