Artificial Intelligence Study Reveals Toxic Effects of Synthetic Dye Quinoline Yellow

A recent study published in Frontiers in Pharmacology has found that Quinoline Yellow, a synthetic dye commonly used as an additive in food products, poses significant health risks to humans. Researchers from the Medical University of Warsaw used a combination of computational and in vivo models to investigate the toxic effects of QY on zebrafish embryos. The study revealed that exposure to QY led to pericardial edema, swollen and necrosed yolk sac, blood stasis, and reduced eye size, with a median lethal concentration (LC50) of 0.64 mg/mL.

Key Takeaways:

  • Quinoline Yellow, a synthetic dye used in food products, has been found to be embryotoxic and teratogenic in zebrafish embryos.
  • Exposure to QY resulted in lethal effects at concentrations above 0.5 mg/mL, with the LC50 value of 0.64 mg/mL.
  • The study employed a combination of computational and in vivo models, including QSAR analysis, attention-based Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), and Transfer Learning (TL).
  • The neural network analysis identified morphological alterations in zebrafish embryos exposed to QY.
  • The research concluded that automation of image analysis and classification using CNN and TL enhances reproducibility and objectivity.
  • The study was funded by Narodowym Centrum Nauki, the Polish National Science Centre.

Statistics:

  • LC50 value for Quinoline Yellow in zebrafish embryos: 0.64 mg/mL.
  • Concentrations above 0.5 mg/mL resulted in lethal effects.
  • 48, 72, and 96 hours were the exposure periods used in the study.
