Boosting Rose Production and Postharvest Longevity through Optimal Lighting and Nano-Nutrient Application

Research at Gorgan University of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources has explored the effects of supplemental lighting and nano-nutrients on rose growth performance, photosynthesis, and production. The study sought to evaluate the impact of high-pressure sodium (HPS) and light-emitting diode (LED) lighting in combination with various concentrations of nano-nutrients (Fe, Ca, and Zn) on two rose cultivars: 'Jumilia' and 'Samurai'. The results showed that LED-exposed roses exhibited improved production and postharvest longevity, with a 33.3% and 34.7% increase in 'Jumilia' and a 34.0% and 44.4% increase in 'Samurai', respectively, compared to control lighting. The analysis indicated that optimizing light quality and applying nano-elements can be a promising strategy for enhanced rose production management.

Key Takeaways:

  • The study demonstrated that supplemental lighting, particularly LED, significantly enhanced rose production and postharvest longevity.
  • The application of nano-nutrients, specifically Fe, Ca, and Zn, improved leaf nutrients and photosynthetic parameters, leading to increased production performance.
  • 'Jumilia' and 'Samurai' rose cultivars exhibited improved growth performance under LED lighting, with a significant increase in production and postharvest longevity.
  • The study highlighted the importance of optimized light quality and nano-element application in rose qualitative production management.
  • Sedigheh Rezai led the research team from Gorgan University of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, with contributions from Mohammad R. Sabzalian, Ali Nikbakht, Hossein Zarei, SeyedSattar Baroodkoo, and Farshad Beshkar.
  • The findings suggest that innovative approaches to lighting and nutrient application can lead to reduced production costs and improved plant quality.

Statistics:

  • The use of LED supplemental lighting increased production by 33.3% in 'Jumilia' and 34.0% in 'Samurai' compared to control lighting.
  • Postharvest longevity was enhanced by 34.7% in 'Jumilia' and 44.4% in 'Samurai' under LED lighting compared to control.
  • The study found that the application of Fe nano-chelate had a higher rank of response compared to Ca and Zn nano-nutrients for rose photosynthesis and production.
