Breakthrough in Cancer Gene Therapy: Unveiling the Interactions of Doxorubicin with Lipid Components
Researchers at Universidad Autonoma de Madrid have made significant progress in understanding the interactions between doxorubicin, a widely used cancer treatment, and lipid components of liposomes for its delivery. The study combines electrochemical measurements, attenuated total reflection spectroscopy, and molecular dynamics simulations to characterize the interactions between doxorubicin and lipid monolayers and bilayers.
The research, published in The Journal of Physical Chemistry B, found that the nucleolipid used in the liposome formulation plays a crucial role in anchoring gold nanoparticles and facilitating the interaction between doxorubicin and the lipid components. Computational simulations revealed that the adsorption process is driven by stacking and electrostatic interactions involving the aromatic and nonaromatic moieties of doxorubicin, respectively. Moreover, the study showed that the presence of doxorubicin does not significantly affect the tilt angles of the lipids.
The combined methodology applied in this study has the potential to serve as a reference for other studies of drug-carrier interactions. This breakthrough could lead to the development of more efficient and novel drug delivery systems for cancer treatment.
