Challenges in Integrating Technology in Education: A Case Study in South Africa

A new study highlights the obstacles hindering the integration of technological pedagogical content knowledge in education. The research, conducted by Lehlohonolo Mofana and Matsolo Mokhampanyane at the Central University of Technology in South Africa, employed Critical Emancipation Research to empower teachers in digital skills. The study's findings reveal that teachers lack digital skills, educational resources, and computer facilities, while schools are in need of digital resources and infrastructure.

Key Takeaways:

  • The study identifies a significant gap between traditional and modern teaching methods, which can be bridged through technology integration.
  • Teachers in the study lack digital skills, citing a need for continuous professional development to enhance their technological knowledge.
  • School facilities, including computer labs and libraries, are crucial for the effective integration of technology in education.
  • The research recommends that schools be equipped with digital resources and infrastructure through sponsorships and the Department of Basic Education.
  • The study contributes to changing teachers' perceptions on technology integration, promoting a shift from traditional to digital teaching methods for the benefit of learners.

Statistics:

  • 6 teachers participated in the focus group discussions, comprising 2 grade 9 Technology teachers, 2 English teachers (grade 10-12), and 2 Mathematics and Geography teachers (grade 10-12).
  • The study found that 100% of the participating teachers lack digital skills.
  • The study concludes that the existing gap between traditional and modern teaching methods can be closed through technology integration, opening doors for future research on this topic.
