Clinical Characteristics and Prognosis of Breast Cancer Patients with Ovarian Metastases

According to a recent study published in Frontiers in Oncology, researchers from the Affiliated Tumor Hospital of Xinjiang Medical University have investigated the clinical characteristics, overall survival, and prognostic factors associated with breast cancer patients who have ovarian metastasis. The study analyzed 41 breast cancer patients with pathologically confirmed ovarian metastasis who underwent bilateral oophorectomy between 2011 and 2022. The researchers found that patients with invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC) were significantly older at initial diagnosis than those with invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC), and that ILC patients typically presented with symptoms, whereas IDC patients often had incidental detection during ablation surgery.

Key Takeaways:

  • The study analyzed 41 breast cancer patients with pathologically confirmed ovarian metastasis who underwent bilateral oophorectomy between 2011 and 2022.
  • Most patients (87.8%) were hormone receptor-positive, and the cohort consisted of 33 (80.5%) invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) and 8 (19.5%) invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC) cases.
  • Patients with ILC were significantly older at initial diagnosis than IDC patients (median 45.37 years, P = 0.014).
  • OM was detected earlier in IDC, often incidentally during ablation surgery (54.5%), whereas ILC patients typically presented with symptoms.
  • For the entire cohort, the median overall survival (OS) was 85.0 months, while the median OS after OM was 28 months.
  • Notably, patients with ILC exhibited a significantly shorter OS after OM (11.5 months) compared to those with IDC (30 months; P = 0.01).
  • The interval from the initial diagnosis of breast cancer to the emergence of OM was significantly associated with OS (P < 0.01).
  • Yan Li and colleagues aim to guide clinical management in breast cancer patients with ovarian metastasis based on their findings.

Statistics:

  • 41 breast cancer patients were analyzed in the study.
  • 33 (80.5%) of the patients had invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC), while 8 (19.5%) had invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC).
  • The median overall survival (OS) was 85.0 months for the entire cohort.
  • The median OS after OM was 28 months for the entire cohort.
  • ILC patients had a significantly shorter OS after OM, with a median of 11.5 months, compared to IDC patients, with a median OS of 30 months (P = 0.01).
