Critical Habitat Shifts Threaten North Atlantic Right Whales
Researchers at Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences in East Boothbay, Maine, have studied the impact of climate shifts on the critically endangered North Atlantic right whale. Traditional conservation strategies are being challenged by abrupt changes in the whale's distribution caused by recent climatic shifts in traditional habitats. The study, supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Oceanic Atmospheric Admin (NOAA), has used boosted regression tree algorithms to build models of historical and future distributions of Eubalaena glacialis foraging habitat on the Northwest Atlantic Shelf.
