Effect of CdSe Nanoparticles on Structural and Linear/Nonlinear Optical Properties of PVC Polymer for Optoelectronic Devices

Research conducted at the National Center for Radiation Research and Technology in Cairo, Egypt, has led to the discovery of a new material suitable for optoelectronic devices. The study, led by M. M. Abdelhamied and featuring additional authors Nasser Almutlaq, A. Ibrahim, and A. M. A. Henaish, examined the effect of various weight percentages of CdSe nanoparticles on the structure, linear/nonlinear optical, and optoelectronics features of PVC/CdSe nanocomposite films. The research demonstrated that the linear and nonlinear optical results reveal that PVC/CdSe films are a suitable candidate material for optoelectronic devices.

Key Takeaways:

  • The study used a hydrothermal technique to synthesize CdSe nanoparticles, which were then dispersed into a PVC matrix via solution casting in various weight percentages (0, 1, 2, and 3 wt.%).
  • The XRD profile revealed that the CdSe nanoparticles have a hexagonal phase with a crystallite size of 22 nm.
  • The Raman investigations of the PVC/CdSe nanocomposite film showed that the band gap energy declined from 5.25 eV to 4.92 eV with increasing CdSe nanoparticles concentrations.
  • The nonlinear optical values of chi(1), chi(3), and n2 increase as the CdSe nanoparticles concentrations increase.
  • The study concluded that the PVC/CdSe films are a suitable candidate material for optoelectronic devices.
