European Commission Sets Target for Organic Agriculture by 2030

The European Commission has set a ambitious target to make 25% of its agricultural land organic by 2030 as part of its farm-to-fork strategy. However, disparities between and within member states in the share of agricultural land currently managed as organic hinder efforts to achieve this goal. A new study published in Environmental Research: Food Systems analyzed the influence of socioeconomic, climate, and biophysical variables on the spatial distribution of certified organic producers throughout Europe. The results highlight areas lacking in uptake of organic agriculture and provide insights into factors that contribute to an enabling or constraining environment for adoption.
