Exposure to Heavy Metals in Utero Linked to Impaired Cognitive Development in Children
A new study published in PLOS Global Public Health reveals that exposure to heavy metals such as lead, mercury, cadmium, and arsenic in utero is associated with impaired cognitive development in children. The longitudinal study, conducted in Tanzania, assessed the developmental outcomes of 310 children aged 3-4 years who were exposed to multi-chemical prenatal exposure in artisanal and small gold mining areas.
Children with increased exposure to these heavy metals were found to have a significant reduction in gross motor, language, and social skills. The study used the Malawi Developmental Assessment Tool (MDAT) to evaluate the children's cognitive, social, motor, and language skills. The research concluded that the combined effect of Pb, Hg, Cd, and As was significant for gross motor, language ability, and general impairment.
