Ferroptosis-Inducing Liposomes May Offer Promising Treatment for Multiple Myeloma

Current research out of Flinders University has yielded promising results in the treatment of multiple myeloma (MM), an incurable malignancy of plasma cells. According to the study, ferroptosis, a recently characterized form of non-apoptotic programmed cell death, may hold the key to novel treatment strategies. The research demonstrated a strong correlation between the phospholipid profile of MM and diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL) cells with their sensitivity to ferroptosis. Furthermore, liposomes composed of phospholipids-polyunsaturated fatty acid (PL-PUFA) ferroptosis substrates were shown to be effective in inducing ferroptosis in MM cells.
