Green Synthesis of Cadmium Oxide Nanoparticles for Water Purification

Researchers at the Government College University Faisalabad have published a study on the green synthesis of cadmium oxide nanoparticles (NPs) for various applications, including water purification, antibacterial, and antioxidant properties. These nanoparticles were synthesized using an aqueous extract of natal plum and characterized through various analytical techniques. The study found that the nanoparticles showed excellent catalytic potential in degrading methyl orange dye under sunlight and also exhibited antibacterial and antioxidant properties.

Key Takeaways:

  • The researchers synthesized cadmium oxide nanoparticles (CMFE@CdO NPs) using an aqueous extract of natal plum, which is a green and sustainable method for nanoparticle synthesis.
  • The nanoparticles were characterized through UV-visible and FTIR spectroscopy, HR-TEM, EDX, DLS, ZP, and TGA, showing a crystallite size of 11.4 nm and a bandgap of 2.86 eV.
  • The nanoparticles showed an admirable catalytic potential in degrading methyl orange dye (MO) under sunlight, with a 95% degradation rate in just 120 minutes, and a rate constant of 2.5x10^-2 min^-1.
  • The statistics show that the nanoparticles have a high potential for water purification, with a degradation rate of 95% in 120 minutes.
  • The nanoparticles also exhibited antibacterial potential against four bacterial strains, showing better inhibition of gram-negative strains compared to amoxicillin.
  • The antioxidant potential of the nanoparticles was accessed through DPPH assay, which showed good activity results.
