Hazardous and Toxic Waste Management in Textile Industry Needs Improvement
Research conducted by Institut Teknologi Nasional found that the manufacturing industry in Karawang, West Java, Indonesia, generates hazardous and toxic waste (HTW) during the production process. The study aimed to evaluate the implementation of HTW management in the textile industry, observing on-site activities and comparing them with relevant regulations. The results showed that the average conformity of HTW management with regulations was 93%, classified as "very good," but improvements are still necessary to prevent harm to human health and the environment.
Key Takeaways:
- The textile industry in Karawang, West Java, Indonesia, generates various hazardous and toxic waste, including wastewater treatment plant sludge, diethylene glycol, and incinerator ash.
- The study evaluated the implementation of HTW management for five key activities: packaging and containment, collection, storing, transportation, and labeling and symbolizing.
- The compliance scores for these activities were 90%, 91.70%, 96%, 100%, and 85.20%, respectively, indicating that some areas require improvement.
- The average conformity of HTW management with regulations was 93%, which falls under the "very good" category.
- The researchers recommended applying methods like raw material substitution, process modification, and environmentally friendly technology to reduce waste and improve HTW management.
