Hybrid Downscaling Model for High-Resolution Precipitation Data

Chinese researchers, in collaboration with international counterparts, have developed a hybrid downscaling model to generate high-resolution and accurate precipitation data at a daily scale. The current satellite precipitation products have limitations in spatial resolution, failing to meet the needs of high spatio-temporal accuracy data in flash flood monitoring, landslide warning issuance, and precise water resource management. The model, based on a soil moisture-based precipitation downscaling and merging method, has been successfully applied to global precipitation measurements in the central Iberian Peninsula from 2016 to 2018, improving spatial resolution from 10 to 1 km.

Key Takeaways:

  • The researchers from the Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, and Sun Yat-sen University in Guangdong Province, collaborated with researchers in Spain and Italy to develop the hybrid downscaling model.
  • The model, based on the soil moisture-based precipitation downscaling and merging method, provides a detailed depiction of the spatial variability of precipitation under different seasonal conditions.
  • The model successfully improved the spatial resolution of global precipitation measurements in the central Iberian Peninsula from 10 to 1 km between 2016 to 2018.
  • The proposed method achieves sound integration of multi-source data and considers the physical dynamics of the precipitation process.
  • The model has good potential for producing high-quality precipitation data with high spatio-temporal resolution.
