Metformin Shows Potential Therapeutic Utility Against Breast Cancer Cells
Recent research published in the journal Cell Cycle has identified the anti-diabetic drug metformin as a potential therapeutic agent against breast cancer cells. The study found that metformin inhibited the growth and colony formation of breast cancer cell lines, including those that were estrogen receptor-positive and negative, and erbB2-overexpressing and normal-expressing cells. The researchers also observed that metformin induced cell cycle arrest in breast cancer cells, but did not induce apoptosis. Additionally, the study found that metformin reduced the expression of cyclin D1 and E2F1, and inhibited the activity of mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) and Akt, as well as the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) in breast cancer cells.
