Optimizing Centrifugal Compressors for Efficient Engine Performance
Researchers at Sharif University of Technology have made a significant breakthrough in mechanical engineering by developing a new method for optimizing centrifugal compressors. The study, published in the Journal of Applied Fluid Mechanics, focuses on Adaptive Cycle Engines (ACEs) that use a centrifugal compressor as their high-pressure compressor. By applying a three-dimensional surrogate-assisted aerodynamic optimization method, the researchers were able to improve the engine performance by 3.4% in terms of design point efficiency and 1.4% in terms of choked mass flow rate. The optimized compressor also resulted in a wider operating range and a reduction of 2.0% in specific fuel consumption.
Key Takeaways:
- The researchers developed a three-dimensional surrogate-assisted aerodynamic optimization method to maximize the isentropic efficiency of the centrifugal compressor.
- The optimization method resulted in a 3.4% improvement in design point efficiency and a 1.4% increment of the choked mass flow rate.
- The optimized compressor had a wider operating range and a reduction of 2.0% in specific fuel consumption.
