Recombinant Gene Therapy Prevents Diabetes in Murine Models

Researchers in the Peoples Republic of China have made significant progress in preventing type I diabetes in murine models through the use of recombinant gene therapy. According to a study published in Gene Therapy, scientists used a recombinant adenovirus containing the human CTLA4-FasL gene (AdCTLA4-FasL) to treat mice with autoimmune diabetes. The results showed a significant reduction in the incidence of diabetes, with only 13% of mice developing the condition after a single injection of AdCTLA4-FasL. The study also found that the treatment abrogated pancreatic insulitis, increased apoptosis of pancreatic T-lymphocytes, and altered splenocyte response to mitogenic and antigenic stimulation.
