Timing Theory-Guided Nursing Intervention Improves Outcomes in Gastric Cancer Patients

Patients with gastric cancer often experience slow postoperative recovery and psychological stress, necessitating enhanced nursing care to improve their prognosis. A study conducted at Shanxi Children's Hospital in Taiyuan, People's Republic of China, aimed to investigate the impact of a timing-theory-guided three-stage integrated nursing intervention (TSIN) on the postoperative recovery of patients undergoing gastric cancer surgery. The results showed that patients who received the TSIN had faster postoperative recovery, reduced psychological stress, and improved quality of life compared to those who received routine nursing care.

Key Takeaways:

  • The study involved 84 patients who underwent gastric cancer surgeries between June 2022 and June 2024 and were divided into a control group and an observation group.
  • The control group (n=42) received routine nursing care, while the observation group (n=42) received a timing-theory-guided TSIN.
  • The TSIN group had a shorter hospital stay (p<0.05), faster gastrointestinal motility, and earlier first mealtime compared to the control group.
  • The scores for psychological stress and cancer-related fatigue decreased, while the scores for psychological adjustment capabilities and quality of life increased in the TSIN group.
  • Significant improvements were observed in the TSIN group, showing significant differences within and between the groups.
  • The study concluded that timing theory-guided TSIN can improve the psychological adjustment capabilities of patients undergoing gastric cancer surgery, reduce psychological stress and cancer-related fatigue, accelerate postoperative recovery, and improve the quality of life.

Statistics:

  • 84 patients were selected for the study, with 42 in the control group and 42 in the observation group.
  • The TSIN group had a hospital stay duration of 10.3 days, compared to 12.1 days in the control group (p<0.05).
  • The TSIN group had significant improvements in psychological stress scores (decreased from 25.6 to 17.9) and cancer-related fatigue scores (decreased from 26.3 to 19.2).
  • The quality of life scores improved significantly in the TSIN group (increased from 65.2 to 76.9).
