Household Attitudes and Associated Factors Toward Community-Based Health Insurance in Ethiopia

A new study in the BMC Health Services Research journal has revealed significant factors influencing household attitudes toward community-based health insurance services in Awi zone, Ethiopia. The research, conducted by the Department of Statistics at Injibara University, aimed to identify demographic, socioeconomic, and behavioral factors affecting household attitudes toward the CBHI scheme. The study involved a community-based cross-sectional study using a quantitative approach, involving 2,939 households. The findings highlighted a combination of factors influencing household attitudes, including demographic characteristics, socioeconomic status, and behavioral factors.

Key Takeaways:

  • The study found that 56.41% of households had a positive attitude toward CBHI, while 43.59% had a negative attitude, indicating a significant divide in household attitudes toward the scheme.
  • Significant demographic factors influencing household attitudes toward CBHI included gender, marital status, and presence of under-five children in the household.
  • Socioeconomic factors such as hospitalization cost, presence of chronic illness, and household income also played a significant role in shaping household attitudes toward CBHI.
  • Behavioral factors such as awareness, satisfaction, and beneficiary status also had a substantial impact on household attitudes toward CBHI.
  • The study concluded that targeted interventions are necessary to increase awareness, improve service quality, and address the specific concerns of households with negative perceptions to enhance the overall effectiveness and uptake of the CBHI scheme.
