Large-Scale Single Tree Information Extraction of Oil Palm in Malaysia

Research conducted by Henan University has yielded a new method for extracting spatial distribution and single tree information of oil palm trees across Malaysia. Using sub-meter visible light satellite images, the Single Tree Extraction Method-Oil Palm (STEM-OP) was developed to achieve an overall accuracy of over 90% and 80% for spatial distribution and number of single oil palm trees, respectively. The study found that the total area of oil palm plantations in Malaysia was approximately 5.25 million hectares around 2022, with a total of 572.6 million oil palm trees and an average planting density of 109 palms per hectare.
