A new study from Shanghai, People's Republic of China, has uncovered the dual role of arsenic trioxide (As(2)O(3)) in human skin cells. While arsenic is known to be a carcinogen associated with an increased risk of human skin cancer, As(2)O(3) has shown potential anticancer activity against various carcinomas. The study aimed to investigate the mechanisms involved in these opposing processes, using normal human keratinocytes, the human keratinocyte HaCaT cell line, and human epidermal carcinoma cells (A431 cell line).
