Ascend Communications and WinStar Communications Announce Partnership for $30 Million Data Networking Contract

WinStar Communications, Inc. and Ascend Communications, Inc. have announced a partnership to provide data networking solutions to expand WinStar's rapidly-growing broadband network. The contract, valued at over $30 million in 1999, involves the deployment of Ascend's GX 550TM "Smart" Core ATM switches and CBX 500 TM Multiservice switches, along with support from Lucent Technologies' NetCare(R) group.

The new equipment from Ascend will add speed and capacity to WinStar's network, catering to the growing demand for fast and reliable data services from business customers. WinStar provides a wide range of data services, including dedicated and dial-up Internet access, frame relay, ATM, and private line transport services over an advanced Tier-1 national backbone network.

"We are thrilled that WinStar has chosen Ascend's core switching technology to expand its state-of-the-art network," said David Misunas, vice president of product management and marketing, Core Switching Division, Ascend Communications. Through the agreement with Lucent, which has provided a range of products and services as part of a strategic agreement signed with WinStar last fall, Ascend is able to deliver the industry's leading ATM and Frame Relay switching technology.
