Circulating Hsp70 Identified as Potential Biomarker for Thoracic Cancer

Research from Technical University Munich has identified heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70) as a potential biomarker for thoracic cancer, particularly for lymph node metastases and early relapse. According to the study published in BMC Cancer, Hsp70 is overexpressed in many cancer types and is present on the plasma membrane of tumor cells, but not normal cells. The intensity of membrane-expressed Hsp70 (mHsp70) is associated with disease progression and treatment resistance. The study found that circulating extracellular Hsp70 (eHsp70) levels were significantly higher in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) than in healthy individuals, with no differences between adenocarcinomas and squamous cell carcinomas.
