Deep Vein Thrombosis Study Reveals New Insights into Risk Factors
A recent study published by researchers at Udayana University has shed new light on the risk factors associated with deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in patients with malignancy receiving platinum-based chemotherapy. The researchers found that high levels of soluble P-selectin, neutrophil extracellular traps (NET), and myeloperoxidase (MPO) are risk factors for DVT in this patient group. Specifically, the study found that high soluble P-selectin levels (OR 3.38, CI 1.180 - 9.780, p=0.02) and high NET levels (OR 2.88, CI 1.026-8.074, p=0.04) were associated with an increased risk of DVT.
Key Takeaways:
- The study found that high levels of soluble P-selectin, NET, and MPO are risk factors for DVT in patients with malignancy receiving platinum-based chemotherapy.
- The study used a case-control design, with 31 subjects in each case and control groups.
- The mean age of the case group was 50.26±12.15 years, while the mean age of the control group was 52.81±11.64 years.
- Most subjects in both groups were female (71% in the case group and 71% in the control group).
- Carboplatin was the most commonly used chemotherapy agent in both groups (71% in the case group and 71% in the control group).
- Cervix malignancy was the most common malignancy in the case group (32.3%), while nasopharyngeal malignancy was the most common in the control group (25.8%).
- High soluble P-selectin level was a risk factor for DVT (OR 3.38, CI 1.180 - 9.780, p=0.02), while high NET level was also a risk factor for DVT (OR 2.88, CI 1.026-8.074, p=0.04).
Statistics:
- The study involved 62 subjects, with 31 in each case and control groups.
- The mean age of the case group was 50.26±12.15 years.
- The mean age of the control group was 52.81±11.64 years.
- High soluble P-selectin level was a risk factor for DVT (OR 3.38, CI 1.180 - 9.780, p=0.02).
- High NET level was a risk factor for DVT (OR 2.88, CI 1.026-8.074, p=0.04).
- Carboplatin was used by 71% of subjects in both the case and control groups.
