Effective Conservation and Management of Tropical Mountain Forests Dependent on Informed Decision-Making
Conservation of tropical mountain forests is crucial to mitigate socio-economic impacts and protect ecosystem services. However, providing reliable data for informed decision-making remains a significant challenge. A recent study conducted by researchers at the Technical University Munich aimed to address this gap by translating optimized land-use scenarios into spatially explicit deforestation projections for a mountain forest landscape in southern Ecuador. The study generated spatial projections of forest loss over a 25-year period, representing three distinct management perspectives, including prioritizing socio-economic benefits, balancing ecosystem services and socio-economic objectives, and emphasizing biodiversity conservation alongside socio-economic considerations.
