Enhancing Crystallization in Nanocomposite Systems Using Organic Nanoparticles

Researchers from Sichuan University in Chengdu, People's Republic of China, have discovered that organic nanoparticles can significantly enhance the crystallization of polymer matrices in nanocomposite systems, particularly under shear flow conditions. A custom-built dynamic-packing injection molding (DPIM) device was used to explore the effect of organic clay on the shear-induced crystallization of high-density polyethylene (HDPE). The findings, published in Polymer International, reveal that the inclusion of organic clay leads to increased crystallinity and thicker crystal planes, resulting in improved mechanical properties.

Key Takeaways:

  • The introduction of organic nanoparticles as heterogeneous nucleators significantly enhances crystallization in nanocomposite systems under shear flow conditions.
  • A customized DPIM device was developed to investigate the effect of organic clay on HDPE crystallization.
  • Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) revealed a 16% increase in crystallinity in dynamic HDPE/clay nanocomposite samples compared to traditional unfilled HDPE samples.
  • Wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) confirmed maximum crystal sizes at the (110) and (200) planes of 335 and 305 angstrom, respectively, in dynamic HDPE/clay samples.
  • Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images showed that the arrangement of crystalline structures in dynamic HDPE/clay samples was altered slightly compared to unfilled HDPE samples.
  • The addition of organic clay beneficially increased crystallinity and crystal size in the HDPE/clay nanocomposite system under shear flow.
  • The preferred regular arrangement of lamellae could still be formed in the dynamic HDPE/clay nanocomposite system.

Statistics:

  • 16% increase in crystallinity in dynamic HDPE/clay nanocomposite samples compared to traditional unfilled HDPE samples.
  • 335 and 305 angstrom maximum crystal sizes at the (110) and (200) planes, respectively.
  • The study was published in Polymer International, a journal published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd.
