Green Biosynthesis of Silver Nanoparticles from Syrian Sidr Leaf Extract

Researchers from Damascus University have developed a sustainable method for synthesizing silver nanoparticles using Syrian Sidr leaf extract. The study investigates the effective green biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) from silver nitrate (AgNO3) as a precursor, utilizing three extraction methods and six solvents. The results show that the Soxhlet method with a methanol/water mixture (60:40) provides the highest phenolic and flavonoid yields, suitable for nanoparticle biosynthesis.

Key Takeaways:

  • The study demonstrates a green biosynthesis method for silver nanoparticles using Syrian Sidr leaf extract, reducing the need for toxic chemicals.
  • The Soxhlet method with a methanol/water mixture (60:40) yielded the highest phenolic (192.83 ± 0.3 mg g-1) and flavonoid (59.48 ± 7.45 mg g-1) yields.
  • Characterization techniques, including UV-Vis spectroscopy, FTIR, XRD, SEM, and EDX, confirmed the synthesis and physicochemical properties of the silver nanoparticles.
  • The biosynthesised ZL-AgNPs exhibited significant antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus.
  • The study suggests that green-synthesised silver nanoparticles have strong antibacterial potential for prospective biomedical applications.
