Improved Oxidation Stability of Carbon-coated Ni Nanoparticles Synthesized by One-step Electrical Wire Explosion
Scientists at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute have made a groundbreaking discovery in the field of nanotechnology. By developing a rapid one-step method to synthesize high-purity carbon-coated Ni (Ni@C) nanoparticles, researchers have achieved improved oxidation stability, making them more suitable for various applications. The thermal oxidation of Ni@C nanoparticles is closely related to the burn-off of protective carbon shells, and the activation energy for oxidation has been determined to be significantly higher than that of passivated Ni (Ni@P) nanoparticles.
Key Takeaways:
- Researchers developed a one-step method to synthesize high-purity carbon-coated Ni (Ni@C) nanoparticles via electrical wire explosion in methane gas.
- The Ni@C nanoparticles have smaller average particle size and narrower particle size distribution than the passivated Ni (Ni@P) nanoparticles.
- The activation energy for oxidation of Ni@C nanoparticles is 161.31-170.34 kJ mol(-1), significantly higher than that of Ni@P nanoparticles (81.22 kJ mol(-1)).
- The carbon shell effectively prevents the active core Ni nanoparticles from high-temperature oxidation in air.
- Korean Nuclear RD program, National Research Foundation of Korea - Korean government (MSIT), and Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) RD program supported this research.
- Gyoung-Ja Lee, Jun-Hyeok Lee, and Byung-Hoon Kim are the authors of this research.
