Lucent Technologies Unveils Full Rate ADSL Chip Set for High-Speed Internet Service

Lucent Technologies, the world leader in communications semiconductors, has announced a full rate asymmetrical digital subscriber line (ADSL) chip set based on system-on-a-chip technology. The digital signal processor (DSP) 16370-based chip set enables two simultaneous full rate ADSL channels, using approximately 40 percent less space per port and approximately 25 percent less power per port compared to technology in use today.

The chip set, which is targeted for use within various types of telephone equipment, including Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexers (DSLAMs) and Digital Loop Carrier (DLC) systems, is a crucial component in Lucent's WildWire solution. This solution enables data transmission over regular phone lines at speeds over 100 times faster than today's fastest analog modems. The chip set is priced at $39 per line in quantities of 10,000 and is currently sampling.

According to Shannon Pleasant, senior analyst with Cahners In-Stat Group, Lucent's ADSL solution is addressing the central office requirement of optimal power, density, and system level integration. "By expanding its DSL portfolio, Lucent has positioned itself to be a driver behind the exponential DSL market growth expected to surpass cable modem growth over the next two years," Pleasant said.

Lucent's large internal manufacturing capability could make the difference in delivering equipment to ILECs (incumbent local exchange carriers) and CLECs (competitive local exchange carriers). The chip set is interoperable with customer premises equipment, such as personal computers, that are T1.E1.413 issue 2, ITU G.992.1 and G.992.2 standards compliant.
