New Study Reveals Genetic Variants Linked to Heart Attack Risk in Type 2 Diabetes Patients

A study conducted at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam has found that genetic variants in the ADIPOQ gene are associated with an increased or decreased risk of heart attack in patients with type 2 diabetes. The research, published in the journal PeerJ, aimed to evaluate the relationship between three ADIPOQ gene variants and the risk of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in Vietnamese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).

The study included 275 T2DM patients with a history of AMI (case group) and 275 T2DM patients without AMI (control group). Significant associations were found between ADIPOQ gene polymorphisms and AMI risk. The G/G genotype of rs266729 and the T/T genotype of rs1501299 were associated with a reduced risk of AMI, while the T/G genotype of rs2241766 was significantly associated with an increased risk of AMI.
