Nomogram Predicts Lymph Node Metastasis in Stage T1b Gastric Cancer Patients

Researchers at the Catholic University of Korea have developed a nomogram that can predict lymph node metastasis in stage T1b gastric cancer patients. The study, led by Ji Won Seo, utilized data from the Korean Gastric Cancer Association Survey (KGCAS) database and included 3468 patients with T1b gastric cancer. The nomogram was constructed using clinicopathological variables such as gender, Lauren classification, lymphovascular invasion status, and endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) within 90 days before surgery. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis revealed an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.841 in internal validation, and 0.821 in external validation.

Key Takeaways:

  • The nomogram developed by researchers at the Catholic University of Korea can predict lymph node metastasis in stage T1b gastric cancer patients with high accuracy.
  • The nomogram takes into account clinicopathological variables such as gender, Lauren classification, lymphovascular invasion status, and ESD within 90 days before surgery.
  • The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis revealed an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.841 in internal validation, and 0.821 in external validation.
  • The nomogram can be used to determine whether standard gastrectomy with lymphadenectomy is appropriate for patients with T1b EGC at a high risk of LNM.
  • The study included data from 3468 patients with T1b gastric cancer, retrieved from the Korean Gastric Cancer Association Survey (KGCAS) database.
  • The research was supported by the Korean Gastric Cancer Association, and the study's findings have been published in the Asian Journal of Surgery.

Statistics:

  • 3468 patients with T1b gastric cancer were included in the study.
  • 0.841 - AUC in internal validation of the nomogram.
  • 0.835 - AUC in internal validation of the nomogram (calibration plot).
  • 0.821 - AUC in external validation of the nomogram.
  • 90 - days within which ESD was performed before surgery.
