Novel Antibacterial Nanofiber Filter for Indoor Bioaerosol Removal

Researchers from Istanbul Technical University have developed a novel antibacterial nanofiber filter that can effectively combat indoor bioaerosol threats. The filter is fabricated by integrating the glucose oxidase (GOx) enzyme into polyacrylonitrile/graphene nanoplatelet (PAN/GNP) electrospun nanofibers. This innovative filter has shown remarkable efficiency in removing aerosolized bacteria, with a 6.76-log reduction and nearly 100% efficiency.

Key Takeaways:

  • The developed filters exhibited a uniform nanofiber morphology, with average fiber diameters ranging from 240 to 377 nm.
  • The immobilization of GOx significantly enhances biocidal activity against aerosolized bacteria, achieving a remarkable 6.76-log reduction with an efficiency of nearly 100%.
  • The synergistic effect of GNP and immobilized GOx enhances antibacterial properties and improves bioaerosol removal capability of the filter.
  • This innovative filter has the potential to combat indoor bioaerosol threats and provide effective indoor air filtration solutions.
  • The research was financially supported by Turkiye Bilimsel ve Teknolojik Arastirma Kurumu (TUBITAK), and it has been peer-reviewed.
  • The study highlights the importance of immobilizing enzymes on electrospun nanofibers for developing highly effective indoor air filters.
