Oracle's Latest Ploy: Free ASP Service to Host Developers' Apps

Oracle has launched a free ASP service called OracleAppsNet to host applications for its new 9i platform, allowing developers to build and deploy their apps without installing software on their own machines. This move is part of Oracle's strategy to become a developer service provider (DSP) and compete with Microsoft's .NET initiative. Oracle's program includes two hosted services: Oracle Portal Online Studio for portal development and deployment, and OracleMobile Online Studio for wireless app development.

The OracleAppsNet developers' program consists of two hosted services, one called the Oracle Portal Online Studio to develop and deploy portals and the other the OracleMobile Online Studio, which, as the name implies, is meant for developing and deploying hosted wireless apps. As a companion piece to the hosted service, Oracle also unveiled what it's calling Oracle9i Dynamic Services, which uses XML, SOAP and UDDI to create, catalog and manage e-business web services. Dynamic Services is to be used with applications crafted via OracleAppsNet.
