Research conducted at the Institute of Clinical Physiology in Pisa, Italy, has found a strong correlation between prenatal exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and the development of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) in neonates. According to the study, which was published in the journal Atmosphere, increased exposure to PM2.5, particularly during the third trimester of pregnancy, was associated with a higher risk of ASD.
