Study Uncovers Insights into Periodontitis Diagnosis Using Salivary Biomarkers
Researchers at Apollonia University conducted a study to investigate the effectiveness of two salivary biomarkers, interleukin-1 beta (IL-1b) and matrix metalloproteinase-8 (MMP-8), in early detection and staging of periodontal disease. The study involved 189 patients who provided unstimulated saliva samples, which were analyzed to quantify IL-1b and MMP-8 levels. Clinical periodontal data, including probing depth, clinical attachment loss, and Plaque Index, were collected for all subjects. The results showed that IL-1b levels were strongly associated with early gingival inflammation, while MMP-8 levels correlated with periodontal tissue destruction. According to the researchers, the combined use of IL-1b and MMP-8 may enhance diagnostic accuracy and guide personalized periodontal care.
Key Takeaways:
- The study investigated the utility of two salivary biomarkers, IL-1b and MMP-8, in early detection and staging of periodontal disease.
- A total of 189 patients were included in the study, who provided unstimulated saliva samples for analysis.
- IL-1b levels (210 ± 95 pg/mL) were strongly associated with early gingival inflammation.
- MMP-8 levels (185 ± 140 ng/mL) correlated with periodontal tissue destruction (p-value not provided).
- The combined use of IL-1b and MMP-8 may enhance diagnostic accuracy and guide personalized periodontal care.

Statistics:
- 189 patients participated in the study.
- IL-1b levels were significantly associated with early gingival inflammation (210 ± 95 pg/mL).
- MMP-8 levels were significantly associated with periodontal tissue destruction (185 ± 140 ng/mL).
- The Plaque Index was measured at 2.35 ± 0.55 among all subjects.
- Probing depth and clinical attachment loss were measured at 3.9 ± 0.6 mm and 3.4 ± 0.6 mm, respectively.
