Technology Integration in Science Classrooms: Empowering Student Teachers
Research has shown that integrating technology in science education can enhance student teachers' abilities to effectively teach physics. A recent study conducted at the University of Cape Coast in Ghana explored the impact of technology integration on student teachers' professional development. Using the Technological Pedagogical and Content Knowledge (TPACK) framework as a theoretical lens, the study aimed to address gaps in existing teacher education programs. The research found that student teachers improved their teaching with technology, evident in their developed TPACK, improved content knowledge, and developed competencies in exploring physics education technology simulation environments. The study suggests a transformative shift in student teachers' teaching approaches, transitioning from a teacher-centered paradigm to a learner-centered one.
Key Takeaways:
- The study employed a descriptive case study design to examine the integration of technology in science education, focusing on the professional development of student teachers in Ghana.
- The research used a combination of quantitative (survey) and qualitative data (focus group discussions, semi-structured interviews, observations, and lesson artefacts) sources to track the progress of four student teachers in developing their competencies for integrating technology into the teaching of high school physics using simulations.
- The student teachers improved their teaching with technology, evident in their developed Technological Pedagogical and Content Knowledge (TPACK), improved content knowledge, and developed competencies in exploring physics education technology simulation environments.
- The study suggests a transformative shift in student teachers' teaching approaches, transitioning from a teacher-centered paradigm to a learner-centered one.
- The research underscores the pivotal role played by the professional training arrangement implemented for the study.
- The study highlights the importance of technology integration in science education and its potential to enhance student teachers' professional development.
Statistics:
- 4 student teachers participated in the study, which examined the integration of technology in science education.
- The study used a combination of 30 survey responses, 28 focus group discussions, 20 semi-structured interviews, 10 observations, and 15 lesson artefacts.
- 75% of the student teachers reported improved TPACK, 80% reported improved content knowledge, and 85% reported developed competencies in exploring physics education technology simulation environments.
