Tobacco Use Among Adolescents: A Complex Problem
Adolescent tobacco use is a pervasive problem in the United States, with over 2.25 million youth using various forms of tobacco products. While progress has been made in reducing cigarette use among young people, e-cigarettes and vapes continue to pose a significant challenge to public health and policy. Our research, which examines the factors associated with adolescent tobacco product use, reveals that emotional distress and the perceived benefits of tobacco use as a coping mechanism are significant drivers of adolescent tobacco use.
Key Takeaways:
- Over 8% of U.S. middle and high school students reported having used a tobacco product in 2024, with nearly 6% using e-cigarettes.
- Among tobacco users, over a quarter of e-cigarette users vape daily.
- Emotional distress and the perception that tobacco use can help manage stress, anger, and other difficult emotions are central to why many adolescents begin and continue using tobacco products, even when they are aware of the health risks.
- Easy access to tobacco products and living with someone who uses them more than doubles the risk of adolescent use.
- Policy efforts that focus primarily on raising awareness about health risks, restricting access to tobacco products, or reducing the appeal of e-cigarettes or vapes will be ineffective in addressing the underlying emotional motivations to use.
- Integrating emotional and behavioral health support into tobacco prevention strategies and expanding school-based and community mental health services are necessary to address the complex issue of adolescent tobacco use.
- Public health education campaigns, such as The Real Cost, have been successful in reducing the number of adolescents who begin using e-cigarettes, but more emphasis on the emotional drivers of tobacco use is warranted.
